Dear NCP members,

First of all, although some weeks have already passed, let me join Leif’s and the NCP Board’s greetings and good wishes for the year just begun. We are all optimistic, that our common efforts will help to get NCP growing in its agenda and weight in the discussion of and contribution to the future of knowledge society. Starting the year in this spirit, we also foresee an intense workshop soon run in Luxembourg on February 4th and 5th, plus a public conference adding the day after.

Up to now 18 members have announced to join the Luxembourg meeting, which, considered that theses members will invest their time and energy, is a great result, thanks to the endeavors of the Luxembourg team: Jean-Jacques Mertens, Susan Alexander and Sylvain Cottong.

The program as attached is near to complete, some smaller adjustments will be made short term.

Sunday February 3rd, in the evening starting at around 18:00 those attending will enjoy an NCP get together at Susan’s place, with a nice sampling of wines and cheese. It is not very far from the center – close to the train station – as everything in Luxembourg. For several reasons, not the least because of weather conditions, the organizers also managed to hire a bus to bring the attendees from the hotels to Susan Alexander’s place, which is at 39 avenue de la Gare, on 5th floor.

On Wednesday morning, the Luxembourg IC association LuxIC, has organized a conference, open to the public, on “the Future of Luxembourg”. The conference has been fully booked in less than a week, so it is now “sold out” – which is a great success. Information on the conference you may find on LuxIC’s website: www.luxic.lu

All those who cannot make it to join now will be informed after the Luxembourg event. Please also keep in mind that end of May the annual assembly on occasion of the IC Conference at the World Bank Institute in Paris managed by Ahmed Bonfour will offer a next occasion to come together.

Dear Members of NCP,

Some time ago you have received notification of the NCP events that will take place in Luxembourg from Monday 4 February till Wednesday 6 February 2013. Please find herewith more details on these events:

The NCP Winter meeting (4 and 5 February) is internal to NCP. The programme is appended (Appendix 1). There will be an informal get together on Sunday 3 Feb evening to meet among ourselves and with some Luxembourgers that will participate. Favourable hotel rates have been negotiated. Lunches and dinners are free.

Themes for the Winter Meeting are the (1) NCP Projects and how they develop (RES, ACSI, HKM, ..); (2) Updating IC methodologies for Nations and for Firms and Organizations); (3) IC of ultra-Peripheral regions; How to reconcile Tradition and Modernism.

To nourish our discussions on re-energizing society, involve remote regions and allying tradition and modernism we invited Prof. Matthews Hamabata (Kohala Center, Hawaii) as a guest (www.kohalacenter.org). He was instrumental in the revival effort of Big Island in Hawai’i.

We would be very pleased if you could participate to the meeting and bring your much valued insights to the discussions.

LuxIC, our Luxembourgish Intellectual Capital Association, further organizes the following day (Wednesday 6th Feb from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m) a conference on “The Future of Luxembourg” where NCP members will make up one of the two panels. We believe that there is an opportunity to design together a model for helping Luxembourg (and regions/countries in general) find the mental resources to re-invent themselves. One of the 4 presentations is based on IC. (App. 2 and App. 3)
The conference is open, free, but you will need to register (App.4 in PDF format / App.4 in DOC format).

Luxembourg is a small town, but rich of history and worth a visit (www.lcto.lu) .
The NCP events will all take place in the center of town (www.cerclecite.lu) (Place d’Armes).
The proposed hotels (App.5 in PDF format / App.5 in DOC format) are in walking distance, with striking views over one of the valleys.

With the hope we can count on your presence in Luxembourg, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Best regards,
Prof DI Guenter Koch, Secr Gen NCP
Jean-Jacques Mertens, President, LuxIC

The ACSI Societal Innovation Lab, which will engage participants from a wide range of disciplines, will be created as protected dialogue, learning and exchange space to foster “out-of-the-box” thinking. Approximately 30 experts will work on two societal challenges.

ACSI Societal Innovation Lab cases
1) The Role of New Academics in South Africa (client Transformation Office of University of Witwatersrand)
Perspectives: the development of South African society, post-apartheid transformation, the varying level of basic education

The case sets the question what is the role of new academics in the South African society. How the academics could benefit the society in a more profound way and how could more meaningful interaction between academics and other actors of the society be created? South African universities have actively engaged in post-apartheid transformation but to some extent bringing diversity to the academia remains a challenge. Which actions could be taken to diversify the academia and make it appealing to all South Africans?

2) Built environment and health (client Discovery Medical Aid)
Perspectives: use of city space, access to the city/services, knowledge, wellness

The case sets the question of how to develop the city space to improve citizen health. The South African public sector health care faces challenges; it is severely under-resourced and suffers from organizational difficulties. Public health care uses only 40% of the total health expenditure but serves 80% of the population. In direct result of this the quality of health in South Africa has fallen. Could city space be developed to enhance citizen health? What would this mean for city planning, architecture, landscapes and services?

The case work will be documented and research report is compiled after the event.

The Global Peter Drucker Forum 2012—A Call to Action for improving Capitalism. November 15 and 16, Vienna, Austria
The greatest danger in times of turbulence, is not the turbulence; it is to act with yesterday’s logic – Peter Drucker

At the core of the agenda of the 2012 Drucker Forum lie key questions about the future of capitalism: How can the weaknesses of the system be repaired without crushing the innovative energies of free enterprise and competitive markets? And what is the role of managers in this transformation?

Nobel Laureate Dan Shechtman will open the conference with his vision of creating a more peaceful world through entrepreneurship. He will be followed by Roger L. Martin, one of the global leaders of the “Thinkers 50,” who will lay out the unintended consequences of an excessive focus on shareholder value and provide clues about improving capitalism. In contrast, Adrian Wooldridge from The Economist will defend the benefits of the maximizing-shareholder-value philosophy.

Lynda Gratton from London Business School, along with other leading academics, will delve into the future of management—Management 2.0. Leading executives from global companies will provide their views on the viability of the traditional corporate model and offer lessons from other models such as cooperatives and employee-owned enterprises. Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, will tackle whether business can be a force for good. The full morning of Day 2 will be dedicated to the rise of social business and social entrepreneurship.

The younger generation will have a voice at the Forum as well: The winners of the Drucker Challenge Essay Contest will be recognized at the gala dinner and express their views at a dedicated session moderated by Julia Kirby, an editor at large for Harvard Business Review.

You can access the full program under the following link: http://bit.ly/P2EQyV.
For registration please use the following link: http://bit.ly/QcMGTx.

The conference will be concluded by a fireworks of short “Vision Talks“ from leading thinkers: Umair Haque, Deepa Prahalad, Rick Wartzman, Roger L. Martin and Tammy Erickson.

Join us on November 15 and 16 in Vienna to participate in a global dialogue to shape the future of management and hence the future of society.
