In the last few decades the world has experienced an enormous change from an industrial economy to knowledge-based economy, where generating value and competitive advantage is associated with intangible elements such as knowledge and intellectual capital.

- Intellectual Capital management models
- Intellectual Capital and knowledge indicators for decision-making processes.
- Management of intangible resources in Public Administration
- Intellectual Capital management within the services sector.
- Knowledge of new business models and the role of Intellectual Capital
- Knowledge management within Universities
- Intellectual Capital Reports within the new economic context
- Management of Intangibles and Capital Markets.

Regardless of the topic chosen, it must be clearly related to innovation.

Forth: The Chair UAM-Accenture Board will designate the Jury for the 2010 Award in due course. It will be composed of relevant academics and business managers. The President of the Board, representing Accenture, and the Director of the Chair, representing the UAM, will be members of the Jury.

Fifth: The author/s awarded will be free to send their original to any Journal, mentioning the Award and the sponsorship of the Chair.

Dear Members or Affiliates of The New Club of Paris,

This newsletter is intended to get you updated on the recent happenings before we start to leave for holidays.

As informed in the last General Assembly in Paris, the NCP managed to have a common Round Table for Malaysia with a Malaysian Foundation called “Perdana Leadership Foundation”. This foundation will be an institutional member for the next two years and hopefully beyond.

If you are interested in the sessions held in Kuala Lumpur: The complete video is made available by the Malaysian hosts at- http://flamingpear.com.my/roundtable/index.html

Dr. Mahatir Mohammed, the former and highly appreciated Prime Minister of Malaysia, chaired the whole event. If you are interested in the summary from Dr. Mahatir Mohammed’s point of view, have a look at the “Closing Session” sequence.

The report on this very special and successful Round Table will be produced over the summer period.

Further on, if you are interested in the current news from the Club, please visit the new web pages www.new-club-of-paris.org. The new web pages are still under construction and we intend to brush them up during autumn.

The report of the recent General Assembly has been sent to the Board of the Club for release. This may take a bit of time since everybody now is very busy before the summer pause, which will begin in some parts of Europe these days.

The very promising ACSI event has started in Helsinki. This fascinating project is aimed at forming a Future Center for the next generation “knowledge scientists” and “intellectual entrepreneurs”. NCP is a partner in this project, and many of the “officers” of the NCP are taking part in it. Results will be communicated to all of us in due course. The NCP considers this to be a model project which has the potential to serve as a template for other countries.

I should also mention that after the General Assembly, preparations have started for further projects listed below:

1. Leif Edvinsson, President of the NCP, will give the key note speech at the European Commission’s annual conference “ICT 2010” being held in Brussels, from September 27 to September 29, 2010. 3500 people are expected to attend the conference and will receive messages from and information on the NCP. The NCP has also been invited by our member Bror Salmelin to participate in a stand at the accompanying fair which shall also serve as a meeting point for NCP members.

2. As proposed by Prof. Pawlowsky, he will start to draft a concept for the “NCP World Tour.” The objective of world tour is to run lectures on knowledge society and knowledge economy on a global scale.

3. When you go through the attachment you will find the proposal for holding an exclusive conference on “Knowledge Economy and Intellectual Capital” for Development Banks worldwide. This event is intended for 2011 and shall take place in Frankfurt, Vienna or Rio de Janeiro – depending on the potential in local support. Download the AWS conference proposal (word document format).

4. An informal mid-term meeting for all NCP members of the kind as we had it early this year in Liechtenstein is foreseen in Sophia Antipolis, France (close to Nice) in the coming winter season. Since the Liechtenstein meeting was so successful, I would very much encourage all of you to plan to participate in this next meeting.

5. In Paris, after the General Assembly, mainly in the course of the very successful PhD Seminar at the Université du Sud which was set up, mentored and run by Ahmed Bounfour, an initiative was taken by a group of “next generation” NCP potentials, to form their own grouping. A draft “constitution” was handed to the initial founders group by Anssi Smedlund. If you are a member of a university and if you are interested to get your post graduate students to join in this new NCP “chapter”, please contact Anssi: anssi.smedlund@tkk.fi . Club Membership for such students will be free. Becoming a member of this branch is, like with the Club, restricted and will be granted only on recommendation.

6. NCP’s Round Table as a concept for Agenda Setting has been proven to be a most attractive Kick-Off event for nations, regions and cities. I would like to encourage all members to think about- if such event would also be an attractive catalyst for your country / region / city to get engaged in projects in support of a transition towards the knowledge society?

7. Please notify that the Club is a sponsor and will be represented at the 3rd Knowledge Cities World Summit in Melbourne.
See: http://www.melbourneknowledgesummit.com/Home.aspx

8. Last but by far not the least: As Leif Edvinsson reported at the General Assembly, a partner of PwC decided a branch of PwC to become a special sponsor of the Club, for now for a first period until 2011. The overall financial contribution from PwC for doing research in cooperation with NCP in this period will be > 100 k$. Once this money has arrived on the Club’s bank account, the Board will set up a budget plan. The one wish which I want to convey to all members as discussed with PwC – besides them becoming integrated into the Club’s information loop like any other member – is that if there will be projects of conceptional nature which PwC will initiate on their part and in which one personality from the “stock” of our members may contribute very specifically, that they may approach such member for getting this member engaged also short term (on their cost !). The decision in such case to accept is made by the approached member himself / herself; the Club only acts as a friendly mediator.

I hope I have given an insightful update on what’s next with the NCP and please use all information for creating your own ideas on what may be done in your sphere of influence in cooperation with the Club.

All the best,
Guenter Koch
General Secretary of the NCP

Text authored by PERDANA LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION, Malaysia, on Wednesday, June 16, 2010

What do knowledge economy experts think about Malaysia’s vision to become a knowledge-driven economy by the year 2020?

8 New Club of Paris members together with 20 selected Malaysian participants, discussed issues related to the above topic at the Round Table “Bridging the Knowledge Divide – Building the Malaysian Link”, held at the Crowne Plaza Mutiara today. The Round Table is jointly organised by the Perdana Leadership Foundation and the New Club of Paris.

Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia and Honorary President of Perdana Leadership Foundation chaired the one-day discourse. The eight New Club of Paris members, Professor Leif Edvinsson, Professor Ahmed Bounfour, Prof. Günter Koch, Dr Jean-Eric Aubert (via tele-conference), Dr. Eduardo Rath Fingerl, Professor Pirjo Ståhle, Mr.Takayuki Sumita and Dr. Piotr K. Stryszowski and four Malaysian speakers Professor Danny Quah from the London School of Economics, Datuk Dr. Mahani Zainal Abidin of the Institute Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), Professor Datuk Dr. Osman Bakar of the International Institute for Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) and Professor Dr. Mahendhiran Nair of Monash University Malaysia, presented their views and perspectives on the topic. Also present at the Round Table were the Minister of Trade and Industry, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Dato’ Dr. Mahani Zainal Abidin of Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia (ISIS), Prof. Jomo Sundaram of the United Nations, Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Munir Abdul Majid of Malaysia Airlines, Datuk Shahril Shamsuddin of SapuraCrest Petroleum and Dato’ Dr. Michael Yeoh of Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI).

The one day closed door meeting started with keynote speeches by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Prof. Leif Edvinsson who highlighted that the cost to Malaysia for not leveraging enough on its knowledge-based capabilities could run as high as RM2.5 trillion, stressing that as a first-mover in the knowledge arena (he highlighted the MSC as a good early initiative by Malaysia to push itself to the knowledge economy), Malaysia must do more to transform its economy.

This set the tone for the rest of the sessions which dealt with issues such as, “What is the nature of the economy of intangibles, and why is it important for Malaysia to make the leap to this economy?”, “What are the major challenges for Malaysia in making the transition?”. “Where is Malaysia now: socially, economically and politically?” and “How do we build Malaysia’s capacity to bridge the knowledge divide, and become a hub for a global national and international link for knowledge in development?”. Examples of Finland’s and Sweden’s successes, as well as other policy initiatives undertaken in countries such as Brazil were highlighted by the speakers.

Click here to view the Videos of the Round table. (It should be noted that some of the files are big so download time will be dependent on your individual connection speed. You are advised to use the “save” option and then play it back as required.)

While the Round Table is a step towards more active dialogue on policy and social issues related to the knowledge economy, The New Club of Paris will formulate a set of recommendations for Malaysia in its transformation to becoming a successful economy based on its intangible assets. The recommendations will be presented to government.

The Round Table is an emerging but already proven instrument used by the New Club of Paris experts to successfully engage with high-level policy makers (the Prime Minister of Finland, the Moroccan ONA Foundation, the Austrian Government ad Parliament, the City of Shenzhen in China and more…). The Round Table in Kuala Lumpur will be instrumental in revitalising the Malaysian knowledge economy and society agenda, taking advantage of experiences gained by the members of The New Club of Paris, who are experts in different cultural and societal settings. More information on the Round Table, as well as speaker presentations, can be found at the Foundation’s website www.perdana.org.my.

Tomorrow, on the 16th of June, the speakers will be engaging members of the public on various topics related to the Knowledge Economy. The dialogues will be hosted by ISIS (Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia), IAIS

The New Club of Paris is the agenda developer for the Knowledge Economy. The Club’s main objective is to create awareness on what the knowledge society is and will be, and also support nations, regions, cities, communities, organisations and companies in their transformation into the Knowledge Economy.

Preface
This volume leans on the Hungarian and more broadely speaking, on European experiences, although the crisis of the state and democracy model is not exclusively a Hungarian, nor a European phenomenon. We wouldn’t be exaggerating even if we modestly claimed that the political-social crossroads have become global. The sociological backround of the book is based on the social crises of Hungary, Central-Europe and the totality of the European continent. For theory creation, however, this regional observation exceptionally constitutes a point of advantage. For instance, in Hungary or in the Central European states that have implemented political regime change, the uselessness of the Euro-atlantic democracy model is more clearly and sharply visible than in the Western European classical democracies and states.
